Pacific Dogwood trees are among the first to flower in the spring, lighting up the forest with their soft white beauty. The new leaves make their appearance after the flower buds open, so the white flowers really light up the forest.
DrDane > 12844 Mating Butterflies on Yarrow Flower, Trinity Mtns, CA - June, 2007. Early morning sunlight is warming up these butterflies, which have apparently spent the chilly night coupled like this. You can see the orange connecting appendage in the center, which appears to be coming out of the male's rear abdomen. TShasta-Trinity National Forest.

Descending from the old-growth redwood forest above, this enchanting stream and its lush coastal environment carry a gift of peace for all who are open to its presence. Since there are no ancient ruins in this area, the image of Quan Yin was added to help convey the feeling.
DrDane > 9904 Mt Shasta over Heart Lake, CA - July 2005. Filtered sunlight gently illuminates the small basin holding Heart Lake, with a still snowy Mt Shasta slumbering in the distance. The lake surface makes a near-perfect mirror as the mountain breeze abates momentarily.
DrDane > 0694 Joshua Tree Sunrise, J Tree National Park, CA - Nov 2003. A blazing sun backlights these unique, desert-dwelling trees, which belong to the Lily family of plants. This is a beautiful park if you love rock formations, wide open space and unique plants. It's best to visit during the week, as the campgrounds are filled with people from the LA area on weekends!
DrDane > 13212 Southernmost end of Endert's Beach, Crescent City, Northern CA - July 2007. Clearing skies and warming sunlight transform this usually foggy coastline to bring out its radiant beauty. Old-growth redwood forest lies about a mile inland, a precious tiny remnamt of what once was.
DrDane > 10567 Flowering Dogwood by Merced River - Sepia tone, Yosemite, CA - May 2007. Dogwood trees are among the first to flower in the spring, with their soft, flowing branching pattern. This photo was taken from a high vantage point at dusk with a wide angle lens. A color version is also available upon request.

Snow-melt water pours into this little grotto from three directions as a Canyon Wren whistles its sweet cascading song among the granite rocks in the narrow canyon. Diffuse early morning light allows for a time exposure to soften the water's form.
